BALTHAZAR'S MARVELOUS AFTERNOON

Balthazar’s Marvelous Afternoon is an adaptation of Gabriel Garcia-Marquez’s short story and J.S. Bernstein's translation. The play was adapted and directed by Gina Sandi-Diaz, with an all-female, multicultural cast. The production premiered in July, 2014 as part of the Kansas Repertory Theatre Experimental Lab at the University of Kansas. The play was performed again in March, 2016 as part of Garcia-Marquez’ one-year death anniversary commemoration. Latin American Graduate Students Organization, University of Kansas.

 

Balthazar is a humble artisan that makes beautiful bird cages for a living. The events of one afternoon led him to dream of becoming rich, but he soon realizes money isn’t all, and he is, in fact, a richer man than his wealthy self-centered neighbor.
